Tayside Children’s Hospital (based at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee) provide care for children and young people with cancer from birth to 16-18 years. We provide systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), including intrathecal therapy, for a variety of malignant haematology and oncological conditions, as well as in and outpatient supportive care for children receiving treatment elsewhere. Treatment is provided by 3 consultants, 3 specialist nurses and a wide variety of associated healthcare professionals including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, dieticians, psychologists, dentists and a dedicated social worker.
Patients are initially referred to Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (RHCYP) in Edinburgh for diagnosis and agreeing a treatment plan, with chemotherapy provided in Tayside where possible. Patients requiring more intensive chemotherapy or radiotherapy are treated in Edinburgh, and patients requiring bone marrow transplantation are treated in Glasgow, with supportive care provided in Tayside as appropriate. Patients over the age of 18 (and some 16-18 year olds) are treated in Ninewells hospital by adult teams, supported by a Teenage and Young Adult Oncology Specialist Nurse, funded by Teenage Cancer Trust.
