Cancer in Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA’s) is rare, but there are some cancers that are more common than others in this age group. The cancers that affect TYA’s are often different to those in children and older adults. Please visit the TYAC website for more information.
We know that being a young person is already difficult and comes with unique challenges. Having a cancer diagnosis can completely disrupt life as you know it.
There are many organisations who provide support specifically for young people with cancer. You can find lots of helpful information and support online. But remember that information is not necessarily specific to you. So it’s always best to speak to the healthcare team looking after you. They will be able to answer your questions and offer support that’s specific to your individual situation.
Meeting other young people who really understand what you are going through can often help. This is usually called ‘peer support’. Your healthcare team will be able to tell you about any local opportunities to meet other young people with cancer. If meeting face to face doesn’t interest you or isn’t possible at the moment, there are online supports available.
